Predicting the best free agent the New Orleans Saints will sign: Baker Mayfield, QB
The quarterback market will be a fun one this year, and the New Orleans Saints won’t be in position to draft one of the top rookie passers because their no. 10 overall pick goes to Philadelphia.
Andy Dalton got the nod for the majority of the season while Jameis Winston sat on the bench, and Saints fans could only wonder how the offense would have looked if Dennis Allen had switched back. This year, they part with Dalton as he’s a free agent. Taysom Hill isn’t a starting quarterback, but will continue to be used as a weapon.
Meanwhile, Winston is still under contract but the Saints go another veteran route by bringing in Baker Mayfield to compete for the job. Mayfield showed some things after signing with the Los Angeles Rams midway through the year in 2022, and still has the potential to be a starting-caliber quarterback in this league.
With the Saints not having their long-term answer at the position, the possibility of 27-year-old Mayfield becoming the guy is much more likely than the team sticking with someone like Dalton. In five games with a banged up Rams team, Mayfield didn’t set the world on fire but he definitely proved he had plenty left.
