5) Why Caleb Kilian doesn’t deserve a Cubs 40-man roster spot

Cubs fans already want to forget Caleb Kilian’s time with the organization. The team gave a lot of pitchers an opportunity last season. He was one of the few to struggle.

Kilian made three starts in June. The first was his best performance and that resulted in 3 earned runs in 5 innings of work against the St. Louis Cardinals. He followed it up with 5 earned runs in 4 innings against the San Diego Padres. Finally, there were 5 more earned runs and 2 unearned scores versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs last these games 7-4, 19-5, and 12-1.

Despite a name that feels like it might have some Irish luck to it, Kilian was anything but a good charm for the Cubs in 2022. In reality, it wasn’t enough to completely dismiss him. In terms of deserving a spot on the 40-man roster, he definitely lost his.

The Cubs have some promising pitchers who are well ahead of him. Javier Assad, for example, made it to the big leagues last year and showed he might have something in him. Adrian Sampson looks like he’s already getting bounced from the rotation even with two quality seasons under his belt with the ball club.

It never hurts to have too much pitching which is why Kilian will likely stay on the 40-man roster until someone proves they deserve it more.
