Cons of Steelers retaining Matt Canada

Well, the Steelers’ offense wasn’t the most watchable, to say the least.

In the 2022 season alone, Pittsburgh averaged just 322.6 yards (23rd) and 18.1 points (tied-27th) per game. Perhaps the most telling is that they had just 29 touchdowns scored this season, ranking second-worst in the entire league (Indianapolis had 28 touchdowns). Near the bottom of the league in these categories despite having play-makers like Najee Harris, George Pickens and Diontae Johnson isn’t ideal.

Pittsburgh’s passing attack was among the worst in the league, ranking 24th in the league with 200.6 passing yards per game. Their rushing attack averaged 121.9 yards per game, ranking 16th in the NFL.

Canada’s first season as offensive coordinator wasn’t that great either. Lets’ take a look at how they performed statistically in 2021:

  • Total Offensive Yards Per Game: 315.4 (23rd)
  • Points Per Game: 20.2 (21st)
  • Passing Yards Per Game: 222.2 (15th)
  • Rushing Yards Per Game: 93.1 (29th)
  • First Downs: 323 (24th)
  • Third Down Percentage: 38.9 (tied 18th)
  • Total Touchdowns: 34 (26th)

There isn’t much to be confident in when looking at these numbers for the past two seasons. But, maybe that all changes if the team can bring in some extra help on the offensive line, possibly using their 17th- or 32nd-overall picks on a prospect.

But, the offense under Canada will have to be much more explosive, especially when they compete in a conference that contains teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and Cincinnati Bengals.

For Steelers fans, they’re hoping that Canada helps bring the offense to new heights in 2023. If not, they will once again call for his ousting.
