Stat shows just how ineffective Tom Brady was this year

This statistic shows just how bad the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady performed throughout the 2022 season.

The end of Tom Brady’s third year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was similar to his last season with the New England Patriots: Ending with a first-round exit. The Buccaneers had a rough year as a whole once Brady returned from his month-long retirement, winning just eight games. Despite Brady’s success in the playoffs, he couldn’t lift the team, as they lost 31-14 to the Dallas Cowboys.

Tampa Bay’s offense was ineffective throughout the year, due in part to injuries on the offensive line and a league-worst rushing attack. As it turns out, the Buccaneers’ offense was even worse than expected.

According to FOX Sports’ Greg Auman, the Buccaneers were 0-for-41 on third-and-11 or longer this season.

That’s right, the Buccaneers were unable to convert on a third-down situation where they were 11-yards or further from the first-down marker. Talk about unideal.

As mentioned, Tampa Bay had the worst rushing offense in the league, averaging just 76.9 yards per game. The second-worst rushing attack in the NFL belongs to the Houston Texans, who averaged 86.8 rushing yards per game. The Buccaneers had the worst rushing offense, but had the second-best passing offense, averaging 269.8 yards per game.

This regular season, Brady threw for 4,694 yards, 25 touchdowns, and nine interceptions while completing a league-high 490 passes on a league-high 733 pass attempts.

In the Wild Card game, Brady attempted 66 passes in the game, completing 35 for 351 yards and two touchdowns, while throwing one interception. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers ran the ball just 12 times for a gain of 52 yards.

Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles made changes to his coaching staff on Thursday, notably firing offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. Others that were let go include wide receivers coach Kevin Garver, running backs coach Todd McNair, and offensive quality control coach Jeff Kastl. Quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen retired.

While the offensive coaching staff is going to be overhauled this offseason, it’s unknown if Brady will return. His contract is up, becoming a free agent, and it’s entirely possible that he could choose to play elsewhere, or ultimately retire.

However Tampa Bay’s offense is constructed in 2023, it will be hard to get worse than how they performed in 2022.
