6 winners and losers of the 2023 MLB offseason

Winner: New York Mets

The Mets would be the winner of the offseason had they successfully signed Carlos Correa. Even after not finalizing the deal with Correa, they are set up to have a dominant team in 2023.

The Mets have signed: Brandon Nimmo, Edwin Diaz, Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga, Jose Quintana, Omar Narvaez, Adam Ottavino, David Robertson and Danny Mendick. And they still remain on the lookout for another bullpen piece, particularly a left-hander with Andrew Chafin and Zack Britton among free-agent options, though both are unlikely at this time.

Still, the Mets have positioned themselves to be a juggernaut, especially with Verlander and Max Scherzer atop their rotation. It’s in large part because of Steve Cohen’s willingness to spend. Never before has baseball seen an owner willing to spend to the degree that Cohen has in the last couple years. And despite other owners’ best attempts to limit his spending with the implementation of the Steve Cohen Tax in the most recent CBA, it hasn’t slowed him down.
