Packers offseason move to make if Aaron Rodgers stays, No. 2: Draft Michael Mayer

A quarterback’s job becomes that much easier when having a great tight end to throw passes to. Patrick Mahomes has Travis Kelce. Brock Purdy has George Kittle. When it comes to Rodgers, he threw passes to Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan this past season. Now, it’s time for Gutekunst to give Rodgers a stud at the tight end position.

The Packers hold the 15th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and that puts them in great range to select the tight end of the entire class — Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer.

Notre Dame successfully recruited Mayer, who was a five-star prospect in the 2020 class, and he proved himself as being one of the best tight ends in all of college football. At 6-foot-4 and 265 pounds, Mayer has the ability to get open and make big-time catches.

This past season, Mayer caught 67 passes for 809 yards and nine touchdowns in 12 games played. In his three years at Notre Dame, Mayer recorded 180 receptions for 2,099 yards and 18 touchdowns.

With both Lewis and Tonyan set to become free agents this offseason, the Packers can give Rodgers a huge upgrade at the position in Mayer. It’s about time that the Packers select an offensive playmaker in the first round, as they have never done so since Rodgers was drafted in 2005.
