Will the 49ers sign a cornerback?

San Francisco’s draft slot doesn’t suggest they’ll select a cornerback in the early rounds, so they’ll probably be looking more for a diamond in the rough type. A better option could be using some of their free-agent capital on a corner, and one of the top players on the market is Cam Sutton.

Sutton’s flexibility is what makes him an attractive fit around the league. He can play on the outside or in the slot, and he’s a little better at the latter. Sutton would get normal reps defending George Kittle in practice, which would only help his development as an all-around cover corner.

Sutton will not come cheap, and he’s sure to have plenty of suitors. This includes his former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, which frankly cannot afford to lose him at this juncture. In a division full of threats at the wide receiver position, the 49ers can’t fall behind. Sutton is an easy answer to their problems, as well as potentially selecting a young corner in the middle rounds of the NFL Draft.
