Chiefs Super Bowl wins: Would Super Bowl 57 rank higher than Patrick Mahomes’ first?

A second Super Bowl would put Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in rarified air.

Patrick Mahomes might already be an active Pro Football Hall of Famer, but a second Super Bowl championship would do wonders for the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s legacy.

The Chiefs have reached the AFC Championship Game every season Mahomes has been their starting quarterback. This marks the third time in four years Mahomes will be playing for a Lombardi Trophy. While he won it the first time around over the San Francisco 49ers in 2019, Kansas City was rendered useless vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ pass rush the following season.

So with a huge battle brewing with the Philadelphia Eagles, let’s answer the hard-hitting question of what Super Bowl championship would be more impressive for Mahomes: Super Bowl 54 over the 49ers, or potentially Super Bowl 57 over the Eagles?

What Super Bowl win would be more impressive for Patrick Mahomes: 54 or 57?

To be frank, it probably comes down to how well Mahomes performs in Super Bowl 57, should the Chiefs defeat the Eagles. If he is a huge reason why they win, it will go along way towards his second title bout being more impressive than the first. However, we might see a game where his tight end Travis Kelce takes it over, as could be the case with their defensive lineman Chris Jones.

Simply put, it is Mahomes’ Super Bowl MVP to lose should the Chiefs win. He would be the presumptive favorite to win the award for a second time in four years. However, Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs will be going up against a far more formidable adversary in the Eagles than the 49ers. It is why, all things equal, a second Chiefs Super Bowl will be more impressive than the first.

When the Chiefs won the Super Bowl three years ago, they were the No. 2 seed in the AFC. Keep in mind that the top-two seeds in each conference still got first-round byes back then. Kansas City faced Bill O’Brien, Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans in the divisional round. Houston had a lot of problems and blew a massive lead to the Chiefs. Next up was the Tennessee Titans at home.

Tennessee was a cute story that year, but there was no way on god’s green earth Mahomes and the Chiefs were going to lose at home to Ryan Tannehill. Though the Titans have had Andy Reid’s number historically, Tennessee was no match for Kansas City in the conference title bout. As for Super Bowl 54, had Jimmy Garoppolo thrown a better football, maybe the 49ers win it in Miami?

Flash forward to this season, and Mahomes is poised to win NFL MVP for the second time. It is a regular-season award, but the notion that he is going to win it still carries a ton of weight. So far, the Chiefs were the No. 1 seed in the AFC and beat two superior teams to get the Super Bowl: The on-fire Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisionals and AFC North nemesis Cincinnati Bengals last week.

Cincinnati won the AFC a year ago. Both the Bengals and the Jaguars put up valiant efforts on the road at Arrowhead. As far as their Super Bowl competition is concerned, Philadelphia is the top seed out of the NFC. They are a more complete team than the 2019 49ers, but it remains to be seen if they have the upward trajectory over the 2020 Buccaneers. This matchup is harder for KC.

A harder postseason pathway in an MVP year means this Mahomes Super Bowl would be better.
