The Saints originally had no first-round pick at their disposal entering this year’s NFL Draft. That was due in part to their complicated draft pick trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. Here is the full details of that trade:

  • Saints received: No. 16, No. 19, and No. 194 (sixth-round) overall picks in 2022
  • Eagles received: No. 18, No. 101 (third-round), and No. 237 overall picks in 2022, No. 10 overall pick in 2023, and a 2024 second-round pick

That trade gave the Eagles, the reigning NFC champions, the 10th overall pick in the draft because the Saints finished the year with a 7-10 record.

Payton stepped aside as Saints head coach last offseason, and spent this season as an analyst for FOX Sports. But after one year, Payton wanted to jump back into the coaching game, and began to interview with interested teams with the Saints’ permission, due in part that he is still under contract with them. So, any team that wanted to hire Payton as head coach would have to trade draft picks to the Saints.

By moving on from Payton, New Orleans now gains a first-rounder back, albeit the 29th-overall pick coming from the Broncos. Denver acquired it by trading linebacker Bradley Chubb to the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins received that pick from the 49ers, who exchanged draft capital to move up to the No. 3 overall spot in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Trey Lance.

So, the Broncos moved on from the pick they acquired from the Dolphins in the Chubb trade and will not select in the first-round. Additionally, they don’t have their own first-rounder because they dealt a massive haul of draft picks to the Seattle Seahawks for quarterback Russell Wilson.

Barring any other trades that happen this offseason, this is what the first-round board will look like entering the first day of the 2023 NFL Draft on Thursday, Apr. 27 in Kansas City, Mo.
