Red Sox should sign Jose Iglesias

Trevor Story is going to be out of action for a little while. After undergoing elbow surgery, it’s unknown when the Boston Red Sox second baseman will return from the injured list. As it stands right now, one would assume that Kike Hernandez will take over at shortstop and Christian Arroyo will man the keystone.

However, perhaps the Red Sox would be able to keep Hernandez in the outfield where he played the majority of his games in 2022. Yes, the Red Sox already signed Adam Duvall, but he’s much more well-suited for left field and could offer a right-handed bat off the bench.

Moving Hernandez back to the outfield would, of course, open up a hole in the middle of the infield. That vacancy could be easily filled by former Red Sox shortstop Jose Iglesias. The infielder played for Red Sox in 2021 after spending most of that year with the Los Angeles Angels.

Known mainly as a glove-first shortstop, Iglesias put up ridiculous numbers during his time with Boston. Iglesias slashed .356/.406/.508 in 23 games with the Red Sox near the end of the 2021 season. Iglesias suited up for the Colorado Rockies last season and hit .292/.328/.380.

For some unknown reason, Jose Iglesias never can seem to hold down a permanent gig, despite the fact he plays above-average defense and consistently puts the ball in play. Adding Iglesias would provide a decent bat and excellent defense while giving Alex Cora tremendous flexibility with the rest of his roster.
