2. The Eagles’ secondary will shut down Kansas City’s receivers

The Eagles’ pass rush has justifiably earned praise all season long but it’s distracted a lot of fans from the overwhelming talent that resides in the team’s secondary. Darius Slay is still the legitimate No. 1 cornerback he was when he first arrived in Philadelphia. Combine him with reclamation project James Bradberry and talented nickel Avonte Maddox and the Eagles trot out one of the best cornerback trios in the league.

This could easily turn out to be the game where Kansas City’s decision to trade Tyreek Hill comes back to haunt them. His absence will be amplified in the Super Bowl by the injuries sustained to receivers currently on the Chiefs’ roster. Mecole Hardman has already been ruled out and JuJu Smith-Schuster and Kadarius Toney were both slated as questionable heading into the bye week preceding the Super Bowl.

Even if both play, it’s unlikely they’ll be operating at full capacity. That means Philadelphia can comfortably cover any receiver the Chiefs trot out on Super Bowl Sunday with man coverage. That will allow the Eagles’ safeties to focus a lot of attention on star tight end Travis Kelce.

Kelce is going to find a way to get his catches and yards but he won’t be enough to carry the receiving group by himself. The lack of a game-breaker at wide receiver is going to haunt Kansas City against Philadelphia’s corners.
