Manny Machado rumors: Yankees could swing and miss

Do the New York Yankees need Manny Machado? Not necessarily.

This is the same player they chose not to pursue too heavily in 2019, but only older. However, in that time period, Machado has proven he can lead a World Series contender, as he helped the Padres make their first NLCS appearance in some time. While San Diego ultimately came up short, it’s that same bravado that will earn him a $300+ million deal entering his age-31 season.

Josh Donaldson won’t cut it at third base for the Yanks, and his albatross of a contract has a mutual out next offseason. Perhaps a buyout of some sort would’ve been able to give New York enough leftover capital to chase after a player of Machado’s stature. Unfortunately, none of that will be possible should he re-sign in San Diego this Spring.

The Machado-Yankees pairing wasn’t meant to be.

Manny Machado rumors: Phillies must look elsewhere at third

Manny Machado would make for a wonderful upgrade over the likes of Alec Bohm. When Machado chose the Padres, the Phillies faced a similar choice between he and Bryce Harper. Philly chose to sign the outfielder in Harper — and it’s tough to argue with that decision. Harper led the Phils to the World Series last season, defeating Machado’s Padres in the NLCS. The steady improvement with Harper as their leader is enough to justify his signing.

But could the Phils add Machado as well? Not if the Padres have their way.

Dave Dombrowki is an aggressive general manager, and he has the permission of Phillies ownership to make such decisions. It’s why he signed Trea Turner to such a lucrative contract this past offseason. Were Machado to hit the open market, the Phils would be involved to some extent.

Yet, A.J. Preller and the Pads hope that never comes to be.
