1. San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres shocked the world when they signed Xander Bogaerts to an 11-year deal earlier this offseason. Bogaerts was added to a Padres team that’s already paying the likes of Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto, Manny Machado, Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell, and Josh Hader.

It’s been fun watching San Diego spend and I’m sure they’ll be very much involved in the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes.

Machado has an opt-out in his contract for after this season which he’s likely going to exercise. If and when that happens, that’s money that can go towards an Ohtani contract. It’s unlikely the Padres would be able to sign Ohtani while also retaining everyone else, but Ohtani makes any team so much better the Padres would probably be okay with that.

Ohtani again seems to prefer being out west and San Diego shouldn’t stop spending when a generational talent like this is available.

Having the Dodgers be considered the favorite to land Ohtani can’t sit well with them and I’m sure A.J. Preller will pursue him.
