1. Broncos 31, Packers 24 (XXXII)

The wild card Denver Broncos were making their first Super Bowl appearance since 1989. Quarterback John Elway was the leader of the team in the “Big Game” for the fourth time. The franchise was a dismal 0-4 on Super Sunday and the last three were particularly ugly.

A 10-9 halftime lead against the Giants in Super Bowl XXI turned into a 39-20 loss. One year later, the Broncos owned a 10-0 lead over Washington after one quarter. By halftime, Dan Reeves club trailed 35-10 on the way to a 32-point loss. In Super Bowl XXIV, the San Francisco 49ers rolled Denver in the most lopsided contest of the 56-game series, 55-10.

The Packers were defending Super Bowl champion and the NFC figured to make it 14 straight wins over the AFC. The stars this day in San Diego were game MVP Terrell Davis (157 yards rushing, 3 touchdowns) and an offensive front that dominated the game. Packers quarterback Brett Favre and wide receiver Antonio Freeman had their moments, but it wasn’t enough.

Next. Each NFL team’s all-time greatest moment. dark

It remains the only Super Bowl in which each team scored a touchdown on its opening possession. Green Bay owned a 7-0 lead but soon trailed 17-7. The Packers would tie the game and the clubs were knotted at 24-all before Davis found the end zone for the third time. Denver’s defense sealed the deal late and this championship was indeed “for John.”
