8. Giants 17, Patriots 14 (XLII)

The 2007 New England Patriots were 16-0 as they prepared for the postseason. The last of those aforementioned wins came at East Rutherford, New Jersey. Bill Belichick’s club rallied for a 38-35 Saturday night victory over the pesky New York Giants.

Somewhat surprisingly, the teams would meet in Glendale, Arizona. Tom Coughlin’s 10-6 club was a wild card entry in the postseason and would win three straight road playoff games to get to Super Sunday. Meanwhile, unbeaten New England defeated the Jaguars and Chargers on their way to Super Sunday.

New York took the opening possession of the game, held onto the football for 9:59 and took a 3-0 lead. The Pats would respond immediately as running back Laurence Maroney, who returned the ensuing kickoff 43 yards, capped off a short drive with a one-yard TD run.

The game remained at 7-3 until the fourth quarter. Resilient Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning led touchdown drives of 80 and 83 yards, respectively. The second came after the Patriots took a 14-10 lead with 2:42 to play. There was a major assist from the hand and helmet of wideout David Tyree. The march was capped off with Manning’s 13-yard TD pass to wide receiver Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds to play and the upset was complete.
