Raiders: Latest quarterback rumors ahead of Super Bowl
By Kristen Wong
Here are the latest quarterback rumors coming out of Las Vegas Raiders camp ahead of the Super Bowl.
The Las Vegas Raiders not-so-gracefully ousted Derek Carr at the end of the 2022 season, opening up a Pandora’s box at the quarterback position this offseason.
Carr and the Raiders have been doing a hostile dance around the prospects of a trade before a crucial mid-February deadline, and the only certain thing about this situation is that Carr will definitely not be wearing the black and silver in 2023.
Where will Carr go? Who will the Raiders bring in the replace him? The rumor mill incessantly continues to churn.
Raiders quarterback rumors: Derek Carr making friends in New Orleans
Last week, it was reported that the New Orleans Saints and Raiders “already have the framework of a Derek Carr trade in place.” The Saints are the only team that the Raiders allowed Derek Carr to visit this offseason, and the two franchises appear to be on the same page at the moment.
NOLA has expressed a clear interest in acquiring the 31-year-old quarterback for an undisclosed amount of draft picks (remember they got a haul from the Sean Payton trade).
The Raiders, for their part, seem satisfied with the terms of the trade and are only waiting on Carr’s signature. This week should provide further clarity on whether Carr becomes a Saint in 2023.
Raiders quarterback rumors: Aaron Rodgers is still the odds-on favorite
As speculation continues to swirl around the Raiders’ quarterback of the future, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers remains the favorite to land in Las Vegas, at least according to sportsbooks.
In a report released a week ago, Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels “told several people that he believes Aaron Rodgers will play for Las Vegas next season.”
After former Packers wideout Davante Adams obviously tried recruiting Rodgers on social media, Vegas may indeed be onto something.
In any case, the league will have to wait until Rodgers returns from his darkness retreat to assess where his mind is at and whether he actually wants to move to the cutthroat AFC West.
Raiders quarterback rumors: Jimmy Garoppolo is a dark horse contender
If not Rodgers, perhaps Jimmy Garoppolo? The San Francisco 49ers quarterback poses as a dark horse contender to join the Raiders in 2023 after some earth-shattering comments by NFL executives.
In the surprising report, the anonymous executives believe the Raiders might prefer Garoppolo over Rodgers next season given Rodgers’ personality and the awkward overall fit.
Instead, Jimmy G would serve as an arguably better veteran stop-gap on the team, not to mention it would cost much less to acquire Garoppolo compared to Rodgers.
Does Rodgers just carry too much baggage at this point in his career? Garoppolo would be the safer choice in many ways; time will tell if either quarterback ends up in Las Vegas in 2023.
