1. Worst Red Sox moves Chaim Bloom has made: Trading Mookie Betts to the Dodgers

This legendarily bad Red Sox trade seems to get worse each year. It’s dreadful in multiple ways. Mookie Betts is one of the great recent players in Boston sports history. Trading him was bad enough. Getting so little back in return piles onto the madness.

The deal did include dumping David Price’s contract, too. It’s hard to justify this to fans. Ownership’s desire to save a few bucks never helps fans understand.

Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs, and Connor Wong are the three players the Red Sox got from the Los Angeles Dodgers for Betts. Verdugo has been a .288/.343/.431 hitter for them, but he doesn’t have much power to speak of. He’s a good, not great player who has done little to replace Betts. He’s more of an Andrew Benintendi.

Downs has already been claimed off waivers by the Washington Nationals after three consecutive professional seasons batting under .200. Wong, who turns 27 this spring, has only 70 MLB plate appearances. He has played well on the farm but there doesn’t seem to be a belief this catcher will have significant playing time in Beantown.

Bloom has made a few other questionable moves or non-moves in some cases. He never did trade J.D. Martinez last summer, even at a lower-than-desired asking price. At least the club did pick up draft pick compensation when Nathan Eovaldi rejected the qualifying offer before signing with the Texas Rangers.

Nobody is ready to build a statue in Bloom’s honor up in Boston. Moves like these have already dug him into a hole. The 2018 World Series feels like it happened much longer ago than it actually did.
