MLB news: David Ortiz wants an MLB game in the Dominican Republic

Per Hector Gomez, David Ortiz is embarrassed that the Dominican Republic doesn’t have a stadium suitable to host an MLB game. As Ortiz points out in his statement, the DR is the home for so many of the game’s greatest stars. Yet, they rarely get to play in their own home country, in front of fans who worship them.

The Latino country (Dominican Republic) that produces the most baseball players doesn’t have a stadium that can be approved by MLB so they can play games in the Dominican Republic during the regular season, we are embarrassing,” Ortiz reportedly said.

What, if anything, can MLB do to change that?

The league as a whole has enough backing behind it to sponsor a new stadium — and perhaps eventually a series to be played in the Dominican Republic. The London Series is just one example of games being played overseas. The MLB Mexico Series is another.

As baseball moves into international markets as an effort to expand the sport, perhaps MLB should consider the DR more seriously. Ortiz would be an excellent spokesperson as one of the best Dominican players ever and a Baseball Hall of Famer.
