3. Marcedes Lewis

Lewis was a decent option for Green Bay as a blocking tight end during the 2022 campaign, but there’s no reason for the team to bring the 38-year-old back for another season. Retirement should be the right move for Lewis, but if he’s determined to play another season the Packers should make sure it’s somewhere other than Green Bay.

The Packers would do well to retain starter Robert Tonyan in free agency. Even if they manage that feat, it could be a shrewd decision to add a younger, more dynamic receiving option to grow behind him. Much has been written about the lack of wide receiver options available for Rodgers in recent seasons, but not enough focus has been paid to the uncertainty at the tight end position.

The depth at the position in this year’s draft class should provide the Packers with a good opportunity to select an immediate contributor in the middle rounds. Keeping Lewis around for another season would only cost that young player valuable snaps that could aid his development.

If the Packers elect to employ Lewis for another season it should only be in a coaching capacity. He’s not even worth a roster spot at this stage of his career. Any money spent on an active contract for Lewis in 2023 would represent an overpay by Green Bay.
