1. Adrian Amos

The Packers’ defense didn’t just struggle up front in 2022. The play of impending free agent Adrian Amos at strong safety was also a big issue for defensive coordinator Joe Barry and his coaching staff.

The former Penn State standout made 76 tackles and contributed one interception last season but his PFF grade of 54.2 makes it clear he was one of the worst starters in the league. It’s a clear area where the Packers can secure a meaningful upgrade either via the draft or free agency in the offseason.

Plenty of mock drafts project Green Bay to address the safety position with their first-round pick. The smarter move would be to take advantage of the lack of premium placed on the safety spot around the NFL to find a bargain in free agency. Spending big on Jessie Bates should be too rich for the Packers, but investigating the asking price of his teammate Vonn Bell could pay big dividends for Green Bay in 2023.

If Amos is willing to return for backup money then Green Bay should consider keeping him. If he wants to be paid like a starter he has to be allowed to leave without hesitation. There’s no reason to pay meaningful money to a player who was well below league average last year.
