4 free agents the Patriots should happily let leave
3. Isaiah Wynn
The Patriots believed they had a long-time starter on their hands when they drafted Wynn in the first round back in 2018. Unfortunately, injuries have plagued the former Georgia standout through much of his NFL career. It’s time for New England to find a more reliable player to man the right tackle position.
That could turn into a costly proposition, but it’s worth the resources required for the Patriots. Mac Jones needs a comfortable pocket if he’s going to produce quality results. Wynn’s lack of availability and questionable play last season was a major reason why New England’s aerial attack suffered from inconsistency.
Several NFL teams would be hesitant to part ways with a former first-rounder, but Belichick isn’t a coach that stands on sentiment. If he believes an upgrade can be secured in the offseason he won’t hesitate to cut ties with Wynn and allow him to make a fresh start elsewhere.
If Wynn does hit the open market he’ll have plenty of suitors based on his talent level, but that shouldn’t be enough to keep him in New England. The right tackle position is too important to continue to entrust to such an unreliable option. The Patriots can and should do better in the offseason.
