Atlanta Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos made it clear that every player — especially Marcell Ozuna — must earn his spot on the team.

Marcell Ozuna has created problems on and off the field. Ozuna was arrested for domestic violence charges, and then a DUI last year. His statistics have decreased in nearly every offensive category from the player he once was.

Defensively, Ozuna is a black hole in left field. It’s why Atlanta brought in numerous outfielders this offseason — castaways from other organizations, really — to push him. Eddie Rosario also has a very real opportunity to take at bats away from Ozuna.

Atlanta Braves: Alex Anthopoulos made not promises to Marcell Ozuna

When asked about Ozuna, Alex Anthopoulos made it very clear that he will not earn a spot based solely on his worth — he will have to prove he’s a better option than the other potential corner outfielders/designated hitters on the roster, which will be tough to do.

“His calling card is his bat, and that’s going to ultimately decide what his playing time is. He’ll come into camp and we’ll see how he looks…this is a meritocracy at this point,” Anthopoulos said. “We’re going with the best player at all times, no matter what their contractual status is.”

Ozuna’s contract is a big one, and it’s a commitment the Braves made after a breakout campaign. Ozuna has plenty of power in his bat, and ultimately will be in the lineup if he’s performing well from the plate. That’s what limited his playing time last year, as William Contreras was a better DH, and Robbie Grossman took time away from him in the outfield. They relegated Ozuna to a bench bat, which could very well happen this season if he doesn’t make the necessary adjustments.

On a productive team like the Braves, which possesses one of the better lineups in the National League, there are no handouts.
