17. Atlanta Braves. NL. East. 2. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis

Stealing Jacob deGrom from the Mets would’ve been sweet but not worth it for the Braves

It remains relatively unclear just how involved or how interested the Atlanta Braves were in the idea of signing Jacob deGrom this offseason. However, it was an idea that fans undoubtedly were interested in and that the organization, conceivably, could’ve pulled off. And it’s something that could’ve helped the Braves.

For the 2023 season, the rotation in Atlanta does looks relatively solid and extremely strong at the top. Max Fried and Spencer Strider appear to be an elite 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation while Kyle Wright is coming off of a 21-5 season with a 3.19 ERA. After that, however, the Braves will be rolling out some order of Charlie Morton, Ian Anderson, Bryce Elder or Huascar Ynoa.

Adding a healthy deGrom to the mix would’ve undoubtedly given the Braves one of the best starting rotations in baseball. If deGrom isn’t healthy, though, he does nothing for them and they’re in the same position. That’s not a mistake worth investing $185 million.

General manager Alex Anthopoulous has been extremely strategic with his big spending, or lack thereof, throughout his tenure. And ultimately, there’s a real chance that he was never going to pay deGrom the type of money he was going to demand in a lucrative market. That, however, looks extremely wise in the current context at the start of Spring Training.
