MLB news: Yankees prepare for future with Aaron Judge
Aaron Judge hasn’t played a single major-league inning anywhere but the outfield, or designated hitter. He likely won’t start next season.
However, after signing a record contract with the Yankees this offseason, it became prevalent that Judge will be in the Bronx for many years to come. As he ages, just how well will he transition defensively in the outfield? Will he be forced to be a full-time designated hitter?
New York is a step ahead of this potential shift, as Judge was seen taking reps at first base in his first day at spring training.
Yankees rumors: Will Aaron Judge play first base?
Aaron Boone told MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch that there was “nothing there” to Aaron Judge taking first base reps. The more likely reason is to keep New York prepared for any emergency.
The Yankees signed Anthony Rizzo to a two-year deal this past offseason, as well, so they are set at the position in the near future.
Judge was drafted as a first baseman by the Oakland Athletics out of high school. While he didn’t sign with the A’s, it does speak to his potential at the position. For now, Judge remains in the outfield — but this is surely a storyline to watch in the years to come.
Everyone gets old. Even a superhuman like Aaron Judge.
