3 SF Giants stealing money from the team thanks to bad contracts

2. Alex Wood is not the player the Giants thought they were signing
There’s a theme going on here, huh? The San Francisco Giants just don’t know when to leave well enough alone. In addition to the multi-year deal that San Fran passed out to Anthony DeSclafani following the 2021 season, the team also gave Alex Wood a multi-year deal.
Wood, to his credit, has an All-Star appearance to his name. Back in 2017 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Wood was one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. In fact, he led the league in winning percentage and posted a 2.72 ERA.
Wood was then part of a trade to the Cincinnati Reds prior to the 2019 season. Along with Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig, and Kyle Farmer, Wood joined a Reds team that was looking to make some noise in the NL Central. But an injury limited the southpaw to just seven games.
Wood rejoined the Dodgers in 2020, but for the meager price of just $4 million. Another poor season saw the Giants ink Wood for the bargain price of only $3 million. The lefty put together a great season and was rewarded with a two-year/$25 million deal.
Unfortunately, last season Alex Wood fell woefully short of expectations and posted a 5.10 ERA and was worth just 0.2 bWAR despite starting 26 games. The SF Giants still owe Wood $12.5M during the upcoming season.
