NFL rumors: Vikings should cut FB C.J. Ham

North of $3 million for a fullback? In this economy? This seems like the strangest salary on the Vikings roster. C.J. Ham had seven rushing yards last season on four attempts. He did score two touchdowns, but he was incredibly close to the end zone to start with.

Minnesota are set to pay Ham $3.8 million this season, but cutting him after June 1 would only cost them $750,000 against the cap. Fullbacks are easy to obtain in today’s NFL. There are only a select few who actually bring value. While Ham has an incredible touchdown percentage, it’s just not something teams need in 2023.

It’s surprising the Vikings used a roster spot on a fullback when they have Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison, and Ty Chandler on the roster at running back. Eight players had more rushing yards than Ham last season on the Vikings, including backup quarterback Nick Mullins.

Minnesota needs to prioritize the cap and the roster as a whole. This is year two under Kevin O’Connell, and it’s time to take the NFC North by the horns. This $3 million in cap savings will go to adding talent on the defensive side to hold off the surging Lions and the possibly decent Packers. The Vikings need every dollar the GM can find.
