Bears trade rumors, Cody Whitehair
Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports /

1. Cody Whitehair

Whitehair has been a fixture for the Bears’ offensive line since they spent a second-round pick on him back in 2016. He was a decent starter for Chicago at left guard last year, but at 30 years of age it’s highly unlikely he’ll still be a quality player when the Bears are ready to contend.

That makes the two lucrative years left on his deal a luxury that Chicago doesn’t need to try to afford. Instead, they should work the phone lines in an effort to offload him for a mid-round draft pick ahead of this year’s draft.

It’s important to note that the Bears cannot afford to dump Whitehair without spending valuable resources on a replacement. They need to continue to invest in their offensive line if they want Fields or the new young quarterback of their choice to thrive. Whitehair’s competence was important for Chicago last year but he was far from irreplaceable at the guard position.

Trading Whitehair to a team ready to make a Super Bowl run next year would be best for everyone involved. He’s still young enough to net a nice asset or two in a trade but he’s too old to be a part of Chicago’s core. It might seem like a mistake to trade such a respected veteran but the timing will never be better for the Bears to deal Whitehair.
