2) Phillies Spring Training Battle for the Fifth Starter Spot: Andrew Painter vs. Bailey Falter

Andrew Painter is one of the most intriguing prospects hoping to earn a roster spot this spring. The young Phillies pitcher has a chance to win a job out of camp, but he’ll be up against a guy who pitched very well for the team down the stretch.

Bailey Falter is the man whose job Painter will have to steal. He spent last year with the club as the sixth starter. Naturally, in this role, he ended up seeing a lot of action. Each team anyone landed on the IL or was unavailable the club turned to him.

The hearts of Phillies fans may want something different from what the heads say. The story of Painter making the MLB club from the start and dominating is tempting. How realistic is it, though?

Painter has yet to pitch above the Double-A level. Starting him on the MLB roster means he probably won’t be around for a late season push. The Phillies need to be cautious. He’s a future star. You don’t want to ruin him too soon.

Falter showed just enough last season to win this job out of camp. It’s not a knock against Painter. A talented arm like his will be more useful when the team needs it most. Games in April count just the same. Falter should be on notice from the start of the year. He’ll win this battle if only because the Phillies would prefer to win the season war.
