Steelers rumors: Matt Canada could use some help

Matt Canada is…Matt Canada. Pittsburgh sports radio was fueled for about six months on Canada speculation, but his future has been ensured for now. He will be the Steelers offensive coordinator next season, as he has plenty of familiarity with Kenny Pickett dating back to his college days, and Pittsburgh would rather not uproot that experience for their rookie QB. We can argue all day over whether or not Canada is the right fit for Pickett, but alas, we’ll get nowhere.

However, an offensive assistant is not out of the question. With Brian Flores leaving for Minnesota, the Steelers have an opening at assistant head coach. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, who was Ben Roethlisberger’s backup towards the end of his career, would be a welcome addition to Pittsburgh’s coaching staff.

Leftwich was an NFL quarterback for over a decade and surely has plenty to teach the likes of Pickett alongside Canada’s offensive scheme. Also, should Canada falter this coming year, Leftwich could slide right in as the new OC without stunting Pickett’s development as a passer.
