3 galaxy brain trades the Bears would love to make this offseason
By Nick Villano
1. Bears take Russell Wilson from the Broncos
Listen, this article says it’s a “galaxy brain” trade. The Broncos are desperate to get out of the Russell Wilson business with his contract going into effect. The Bears have a ton of cap space going into this season. In fact, they have $94 million in salary cap space, according to Over the Cap.
Russell Wilson holds a $22 million cap hit this season. Honestly, the Bears might even make a few cuts and take the $107 million dead cap hit (although that’s incredibly unrealistic). The more realistic option is the Bears accept a very good haul to take on a contract for a few years. Wilson can teach Justin Fields to be a great quarterback while making a ton of money to be a backup.
Patrick Surtain looks like he’s on his superstar trajectory at cornerback. The Broncos’ 2024 first-round pick is an incredible asset. Even with Sean Payton, this team needs so much that the pick is likely to be top 10 in 2024.
The Broncos could even convert some of the salary into a signing bonus so they take on some of the cap. Or, even better, the Bears could convert some of the salary to pay it upfront. Wilson knows a team is going to get out of this contract as soon as they can. The Bears could eat up some of the salary and get two amazing assets to do so.
