Chiefs who should be on the trade block: 2. Clyde Edwards-Helaire

The Chiefs spent a first-round pick on the former LSU standout with the idea that he could turn into a perennial Pro Bowl running back in Andy Reid’s offense. Slipping to third on the team’s depth chart ahead of this year’s playoff run makes it clear Edwards-Helaire’s stock with the organization is on the decline. Him skipping the team’s Super Bowl parade is not a great look, either.

Combine that with the fact that he’s also heading into the last year of his rookie contract and it’s clear the Chiefs will at least listen to calls for the enigmatic running back. They may have a tepid market for Edwards-Helaire’s services but it’s conceivable that another team might view him as a good buy-low candidate around the draft.

If the Chiefs can manage to pry a mid-round draft pick away from someone in exchange for a third-string running back they should jump at the chance. That would be an admission that spending a first-rounder on him was a mistake, but it’s a cost the Chiefs need to recognize as sunk at this juncture.

Some Chiefs fans might believe giving up on a talented skill player would be an offseason mistake, but Edwards-Helaire just doesn’t have the trust of his coaching staff. He can benefit from a fresh start somewhere else and Kansas City would be wise to offload his bloated salary in a trade.
