5. Texas Rangers will regret how much they paid Jacob deGrom

The Texas Rangers outbid themselves for Jacob deGrom. The ace who has missed the second part of 2021 and the first half of 2022 is getting a lot of money from Texas to do more than pitch half a year. Some early spring stiffness already has doubters concerned. It’s minor, but the first signs of regret are already present. It’s a good thing they actually have a full rotation behind him to pick up the pieces.

4. Chicago Cubs will regret the Jameson Taillon contract

A willingness to take risks is something the Chicago Cubs focused on this winter. One not-so-risky move was signing Jameson Taillon. The four-year deal worth $68 million seems overpriced for a player in his situation. He’s not especially young or accomplished as a major league pitcher. It feels like a major reach by the Cubs to believe he was a strong buy for them. It seems like another Marcus Stroman-type signing. It’ll work out well except the team around him won’t be good enough to justify the deal.

3. San Francisco Giants will regret not ending up with at least one star

There was zero chance the San Francisco Giants would get to Opening Day without at least one of the big superstars. Aaron Judge or Carlos Correa would play for them. The New York Yankees managed to keep Judge and the Giants passed on Correa because of his medicals. By this point, the Giants didn’t have too many other places to turn. Mitch Haniger and Michael Conforto don’t cut it. Neither do Sean Manaea or Ross Stripling. This is a team with a bit of a chip on its shoulders. It won’t be enough to win them more than 81 games.

2. Chicago White Sox will regret signing Mike Clevinger

No team may have more regrets than the Chicago White Sox. Andrew Benintendi’s contract is worth how much? They let Jose Abreu go. Worst of all, they let Johnny Cueto walk and instead signed Mike Clevinger. Domestic abuse allegations have already come out against Clevinger. Things are off to an awful start. It was already a bad baseball move. It’s worse with the off-field issues following him to Chicago.

1. Milwaukee Brewers will regret ruining their relationship with Corbin Burnes

Topping this week’s MLB Power Rankings is how the Milwaukee Brewers have ruined their relationship with star pitcher Corbin Burnes. The 2021 NL Cy Young winner admitted this after an arbitration hearing because the two sides couldn’t agree on a new deal. It’s a distraction the Brewers don’t need. It’s a horrible look for the club when it comes to keeping him and attracting other players. The Brewers are their own worst enemy.
