NBA Power Rankings Tier 8: The Wembanyama sweepstakes

Sam Hinkie would be proud.

These teams have the four worst records in the NBA.

Charlotte Hornets

The Hornets actually dropped 144 points against the Hawks recently, but that may be more of a statement about Atlanta’s defense. With Mason Plumlee gone, rookie Mark Williams has a clear path to minutes. That may be the biggest non-draft-related storyline left for the franchise this season.

Detroit Pistons

Detroit’s postseason aspirations flew out of the window this season when Cade Cunningham suffered a season-ending injury. It may work out for their long-term benefit, though. Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and a top-three pick could form a dangerous big three. Side plot: The Pistons have three young centers (Jalen Duren, Isaiah Stewart, and James Wiseman). How is that going to be managed moving forward?

San Antonio Spurs

Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Jeremy Sochan make up an exciting young core. This team would be a great fit for either Wembanyama or Henderson.

Houston Rockets

The Rockets have the worst record in the league, but they may be looking to compete next season. First of all, the Thunder own their 2024 first-round pick, so they have no incentive to tank. Secondly, a potential James Harden reunion continues to be rumored, and the Rockets are projected to have $72.6 million in practical cap space, per Spotrac.
