What Aaron Rodgers return to Green Bay means for Jordan Love

It feels as though perhaps Jordan Love’s true NFL debut could be pushed off “another year” in perpetuity at this point. Though Love has appeared in 10 games, his 2021 debut proved the Packers were not ready to move to him full-time just yet, and he only saw 26 snaps in 2022.

It’s not entirely clear where the franchise stands on Love at this point. When he was first drafted out of Utah State in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, it was clear they viewed him as the definitive Rodgers successor, the only question was when.

The longer this song and dance goes on, the question then goes back to who rather than when. Especially because some insiders think Love will request a trade if he’s asked to sit behind Rodgers another year.

There is some precedent here with Green Bay, though. Rodgers waited in the background for three full seasons behind Brett Favre before taking on a full-time starting role, and even then, he wasn’t a winner from the get-go. The Packers went 6-10 in his first year starting full-time.

Still, a backup year and a possible trade request is the most likely way this part of the equation goes.

Domino falling: Jordan Love asked to sit another year and requests a trade.
