Cowboys “galaxy brain” trade No. 3: Moving up

Would the Atlanta Falcons do this? That depends.

How soon do they want to compete?

With Desmond Ridder on the roster, the Falcons will not be focused on drafting a quarterback, unlike many other teams in the top 10. Edge rusher is a massive need. The Falcons had the second-fewest sacks in the NFL last season. If Will Anderson, Jalen Carter, Tyree Wilson, and Myles Murphy are all off the board at eight, which is a real possibility, this trade becomes interesting for Atlanta.

Last season, Lawrence had six sacks and 55 pressures. He also led all edge defenders in run-stop rate, according to PFF.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys get a chance to secure their quarterback of the future without having to navigate Prescott’s dead cap this season. If they move on from Prescott in 2024, they will incur $39.94 million in dead cap, which is easier to work with.

In addition, this move saves the Cowboys $6 million in 2023 cap space.
