NFL Rumors: Jaguars likely cutting CB Shaquill Griffin

Getting rid of Urban Meyer turned out to be the best thing that the Jacksonville Jaguars could’ve done heading into this past season. With Doug Pederson at the helm, Trevor Lawrence led this team to an AFC South title and a subsequent playoff berth. Of course, it was clear the work is not done in building the roster, but the future is much brighter with the right head coach in place.

Having said that, roster building after the way that the Jaguars spent in free agency last offseason means that they will have some tough financial decisions to make heading into 2023. And that could mean one former high-priced free agent signing getting let go.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Jaguars are expected to release 27-year-old cornerback Shaquill Griffin. The move would save $13.1 million against the cap.

Griffin signed a three-year, $40 million deal with Jacksonville back in 2021 and has been good not great and certainly inconsistent in the secondary. However, he did make a Pro Bowl back in 2019 while on his rookie contract with the Seahawks and, at his age and as Fowler mentioned, there should be a market for him.

Guys like Jamel Dean, James Bradberry and Cameron Sutton could be better hauls in free agency at cornerback this offseason, but Griffin should comfortably slot in right behind those players as coveted commodity.
