3 strangest players to ever play in a Bears jersey
By Nick Villano
1. Bobby Layne
This one is going way back, but Bobby Layne was one of the first great starting quarterbacks. This one is much different than Pace and Allen. Layne was famous for his time with the Detroit Lions and his final stretch with the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, it all started in Chicago. When the Steelers drafted him, he demanded a trade and was sent to Chicago. He had a chance to play with the Colts, but rumors state George Halas talked him into playing in the Windy City.
Layne played one season with the Bears in 1948. He completed 30 percent of his passes and was quickly dispatched after demanding another trade. He wanted to go to the Green Bay Packers but was sent to New York instead. This is what happens when a player just isn’t performing at his position.
The Bears had Sid Luckman at the time, and they couldn’t make the move to a rookie. To be fair, he went to New York and won one game. He finally figured it out when he went to Detroit.
Layne had a wild career, asking for trades and getting blindsided by trades. This was similar to what the NBA is going through now. He reportedly cursed the Lions, but we’re trying to figure out who cursed the Bears.
