MLB Spring Training predictions: Pittsburgh Pirates

Prediction: Finish at or above .500

Of all the predictions I’ve done thus far, this is perhaps the boldest. But I think the Pirates’ time is almost near.

The Pirates have a strong young core on offense in Bryan Reynolds, Oneil Cruz and Ke’Bryan Hayes. They prioritized adding veteran players to the locker room this offseason to help at the major league level, but also to be around the young players, specifically Cruz and Hayes, and be positive influences on them.

So the Pirates added Andrew McCutchen, Ji-man Choi, Carlos Santana and Rich Hill to the locker room, and they have already seen benefits during spring training. McCutchen has been seen around the young hitters. Hill, the oldest pitcher in baseball, has been working with the young pitchers and giving pointers.

It will be difficult for the Pirates to advance to the postseason. But a record at .500, or even slightly above that, is not out of the question.
