Saquon Barkley rumors: 5 best fits in free agency
Top Free Agent Fits For Saquon Barkley – Chicago Bears
Any NFL free agent looking to get paid this offseason will certainly have Bears’ GM Ryan Poles on speed dial. Chicago leads the league with nearly $100 million in salary cap room, giving them the ability to make multiple splashes to improve their roster.
The priority for the Bears is to build a better infrastructure around young quarterback Justin Fields, who showed flashes of superstar potential in 2022. The problem was that Fields had little help around him with Darnell Mooney as his top receiver and David Montgomery missing time with injuries in the backfield.
Montgomery, who looked like an ascending talent of his own a few years ago, fell into a timeshare with Khalil Herbert and is now a free agent. While it would make some sense to retain Montgomery and see if he recaptures his old form, the Bears can afford to splurge on a shiny new back for Fields in Barkley.
Having a stronger running back could allow Chicago to design more read-option plays for Fields, which takes advantage of one of his strongest skills. The Bears also have a proud tradition of excellent running backs and Barkley would be the latest star to shine at Soldier Field.
