NFL rumors: Aaron Rodgers to the Jets isn’t so easy

When the Jets missed out on Derek Carr, some assumed it was because they knew Aaron Rodgers was the top prize. That’s arguable at best given how Rodgers looked at times last year, his potential asking price, and the literal cost of the now-Packers QB’s contract.

With Rodgers current deal in place, the Jets would not only have to send away a high draft pick(s), but also pay his contract, which would limit their choices in free agency. If No. 12 really does want to play for a winner, then perhaps he’ll renegotiate his deal or find a way to restructure it. But for now, that remains a potential conflict in any trade sending Rodgers to New York.

For the Jets, pushing all their chips in the middle for Rodgers is a risk in its own right. Rodgers is 39 years of age, and will turn 40 towards the end of next season. He’s coming off a down year, by his standards. There’s no guarantee he’ll be the same Aaron Rodgers who won back-to-back NFL MVPs in 2020 and 2021. That player might be gone, ready to walk off into the sunset (or in his case, complete darkness).

If Rodgers wants his money, the Jets are a realistic possibility.
