Adam Duvall is stealing from the Red Sox thanks to a bad contract
This was a “just in case” signing on the part of the Boston Red Sox. For their sake, the hope would be that Adam Duvall has success early in the season and is traded before the dog days of summer. If he struggles, however, Duvall’s contract could be quite bad.
After Trevor Story was declared out (elbow injury) to start the season, the Red Sox made the decision to ink Duvall to a one-year/$7-million contract. The hope is that Duvall can cover the challenging center field at Fenway Park while Kike Hernandez handles shortstop duty until Story returns.
However, the Red Sox already have a talented young centerfielder down on the farm in Ceddanne Rafaela. The young outfielder shows great promise and is ranked as the team’s No. 3 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline.
After playing in just 86 games last season and hitting a measly .213/.276/.401, the Red Sox are banking on the 34-year-old returning to his 2021 form when he led the National League in RBIs (113) while splitting time between the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins.
If Adam Duvall cannot get back to that level play that also saw him win his first-ever Gold Glove, then the Louisville, Kentucky native will effectively being stealing money from Boston in 2023.
