Patriots offseason plan, Step 1: Draft Peter Skoronski

Drafting a Northwestern offensive lineman just feels like something Belichick would love to do in Round 1. Moving up to grab Skoronski could be both shrewd and on-brand for the Patriots.

The team tried to solve their tackle problem by drafting Isaiah Wynn in the first round back in 2018. Injuries and inconsistent play have caused the former Georgia standout to wear out his welcome in Foxborough. He’s headed to free agency which leaves a big hole for New England at right tackle.

Some teams see Skoronski’s lack of length as a sign that he’s better suited to play guard at the next level. The Patriots will place more faith in evaluating his tape than his arm measurement. Skoronski was one of the best pass-blockers in college football last season and should be given the chance to stick at tackle.

Even if he is forced to slide inside he’s got the power to emerge as a perennial Pro Bowler. That’s why New England can afford to spend a Day One selection on him even with concerns about his length. Skoronski can help protect Patriots quarterbacks for the next decade. That’s solid value in Round 1 no matter what position he ultimately plays.
