Better than Daniel Jones QB #1: Lamar Jackson

The Offseason of Lamar is going about as well as expected. Following a year-long contract war between the Baltimore Ravens and Lamar Jackson, the team decided to place a non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson for 2023.

What exactly is Lamar Jackson’s value heading into 2023?

It’s miles above that of Daniel Jones, that’s for sure. Jackson appears intent on securing a fully guaranteed deal like Deshaun Watson’s, but… is any quarterback worth that much? It behooves NFL teams to consider Watson’s contract as an outlier, rather than a baseline, and that’s why most quarterbacks aren’t gunning for that much guaranteed money.

In Jackson’s case, he doesn’t have an agent to represent himself, which could explain why Jackson isn’t backing down.

Jackson already turned down a six-year, $250 million contract with $133 million in guaranteed money — he wants that Watson money. Bad.

The 2019 MVP broke numerous league records in his past four seasons and stands out as a franchise-altering quarterback for any team that wants him. The only problem is, his market is growing smaller and smaller as several quarterback-needy teams (Falcons, Commanders, Panthers) have publicly stated that they aren’t pursuing him.

Despite some injury concerns — Jackson missed the second half of the 2021 and 2022 seasons — Jackson remains an elite and unique talent entering the apex of his career, and it’s honestly baffling why more teams aren’t at least taking a flier on him.

Jackson’s relationship to the Ravens may be too fractured to save, and Jackson may not get his fully guaranteed deal after all. But unless Jackson ends up playing on the tag, Danny will get dimes compared to what Jackson stands to make after this turbulent offseason.
