12. MLB contracts: Manny Machado, SDP – $300M/10 years

Manny Machado comes in at number 12 with the original contract he signed with the San Diego Padres in 2019.

After leaving Baltimore, his first foray into the free-agent market resulted in the 10-year, $300M deal that lasted only four seasons.

For his part, Machado did what he could when he arrived in 2019. He hit 32 home runs, drove in 85 and scored 81 runs on a last-place team in the NL West. Since then, Machado has been consistently good, and the team around him has improved.

Over the four seasons under this contract, he slashed .280/.352/.504 and averaged 34 homers, 99 runs, and 106 RBI per 162 games.

So, how has the team fared over the first four years of Machado’s tenure in San Diego?

After his first season on the west coast, in which the Padres finished 70-92, the team improved in 2020, finishing second in the NL West and making the playoffs before being swept by the Dodgers in the NLDS. But the Padres again missed the playoffs in 2021 with a 79-83 record.

Last season the Padres loaded up the roster, secured a Wild Card berth at 89-73, and made it to the NLCS.

It’s safe to say that Machado held up his end of the deal with his individual performance over the past four seasons, and it looks like team success is finally catching up.
