Out of the 37 compensatory 2023 NFL Draft picks that were announced by the league, the San Francisco 49ers led in a huge way.
The San Francisco 49ers‘ recent success can be attributed to their ability to scout talent in college, select them in the NFL Draft, and develop them into legit starters at the professional level. As a result of their talent, coaching, and drafting, they made it to the NFC Championship Game three times in the past four years. Ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, the 49ers got even more picks to utilize at the three-day event from Apr. 27-29.
On Thursday, the NFL officially announced the compensatory picks given to eligible teams. Out of the 37 picks rewarded, the 49ers cleaned up with seven, including three third-round picks. Those three third-rounders were given based off the league’s initiative for teams to develop minority candidates into future head coaches and general managers of new teams.

The third-round picks that the 49ers acquired are Nos. 99, 101, and 102. Those picks were gained after Robert Saleh was hired as New York Jets head coach in 2021, Martin Mayhew was named general manager of the Washington Commanders in 2021, Mike McDaniel became the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2022, DeMeco Ryans was hired as head coach of the Houston Texans in 2023, and Ran Carthon became the general manager of the Tennessee Titans in 2023.
San Francisco’s other four draft picks were given to them after their net loss of qualified free agents last offseason. As ESPN’s Nick Wagoner points out, the 49ers gained cornerback Charvarius Ward, but lost running back Raheem Mostert, offensive guard Laken Tomlinson, cornerback K’Wuan Williams, and defensive linemen Arden Key and D.J. Jones last offseason.
Below are the official compensatory picks that the 49ers acquired:
- Third Round: Picks 99, 101, and 102
- Fifth Round: Pick 173
- Sixth Round: Pick 216
- Seventh Round: Picks 253, 255
The Los Angeles Rams were the team that had the second-most compensatory picks awarded to them with four. The Arizona Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys, and Kansas City Chiefs were all tied with the third-most compensatory picks awarded with three.
With seven new compensatory picks, the 49ers will have 11 picks at their disposal throughout the three days of the 2023 NFL Draft.
