Packers perfect offseason plan step 2: Acquire veteran pass catchers

Watson and Doubs have the potential to develop into dynamic receivers. Over his final eight games of the season, Watson posted 52 receptions for 523 yards and seven touchdowns; he also rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown. His big-play ability is apparent. He just needs to continue to become more consistent.

Doubs’s rookie season did not follow the same trajectory. He got off to a good start, but then he missed time due to an ankle injury. Later in the season, Doubs returned, and he was solid in limited action. Regardless, Doubs had flashes of upside. It was on full display in Week 3 against the Buccaneers, as he led the Packers with eight receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown.

Both young receivers should take a step forward in year two. Nevertheless, it would be wise for the Packers to add a proven veteran to the mix. One intriguing option is Brandin Cooks of the Houston Texans. In 2021, Cooks was fantastic, as he recorded a career-high 90 receptions for 1,037 yards and six touchdowns, despite inconsistent quarterback play. Cooks’ combination of elite speed and reliable hands make him one of the most underrated wide receivers in the league. His presence would also give Watson and Doubs more room to operate downfield, as defenses would not be able to solely key in on them.

This season, Cooks’s contract includes $16.5 million in yearly cash, per Spotrac. At the moment, the Packers have roughly $17.3 million in cap space. The Packers could offer the Texans their 2023 third-round pick (79th overall) for the wideout.

Another position to watch is tight end. Robert Tonyan will be an unrestricted free agent. If he leaves, Hayden Hurst and Maxx Williams are potential free-agent targets. Albert Okwuegbunam is a nice trade option.
