2. Biggest losers of Atlanta Braves spring training so far: Orlando Arcia

The Atlanta Braves decided not only to allow Dansby Swanson to test free agency this offseason but once he signed a massive deal with the Chicago Cubs, Alex Anthopoulos did not bring in one of the many highly-touted free agent shortstops to fill the void.

Instead, there was to be an open competition between veteran infield Orlando Arcia and the up-and-coming Vaughn Grissom. While Grissom was viewed to have the better opportunity to land the starting job after appearing in 41 games last season, Arcia’s experience would certainly have him in the mix.

And though Grissom hasn’t taken off this spring, Arcia has fallen flat on his face. The Venezuelan has just one hit this spring in six games and that lone hit was just a single. Grissom hasn’t set the world on fire, but so long as the 22-year-old doesn’t crater over the next couple of weeks, the starting shortstop job is his.

Orlando Arcia was always going to be fighting off the youngster throughout the season, but a solid showing this spring would’ve probably landed the veteran a starting job to begin the season. As it stands now, Arcia will be a bench bat at best heading into the 2023 season.
