MLB news: Jacob deGrom takes next step toward Texas Rangers return
The deGrom hype train is once again back on the tracks in the Lone Star State as the 34-year-old right-hander faced live batters for the first time this spring on Wednesday, throwing 35 pitches over two innings of batting practice work.
deGrom not only returned to the mound, but did it with authority as well, reportedly hitting 100 mph with one of his pitches.
“Today was good,” deGrom said in this article. “It was a big step facing hitters. When somebody steps in, I have a hard time not focusing on trying to get guys out. So that felt good.”
The next step for deGrom is reportedly a spring training start, something that manager Bruce Bochy hopes the star pitcher can do three times before Texas is scheduled to host the Philadelphia Phillies for Opening Day on March 30. Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News has estimated that, if deGrom can make three starts this spring, he would be in line to throw 60-75 pitches in his first regular-season start.
There is no timetable at present for when deGrom might make his first spring training start.
