Chiefs rumors: JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman could be replaced in NFL Draft

Both JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman are free agents this offseason, and it feels unlikely that Patrick Mahomes gets both of his targets back. Both are expected to receive long-term deals worth more than $10 million per season. The Chiefs don’t have the kind of money to pay Hardman and Smith-Schuster, unless they sacrifice something else in return.

Mahomes is too talented to spend this much on a receiving corps. As we found out last year, the NFL MVP makes the players around him better. There’s no need to overpay for any one wide receiver, hence the Tyreek Hill trade. Signing both of these wideouts makes very little sense, despite winning the Super Bowl with them.

The 33rd team scouting department suggests that Kansas City could be in on Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Smith-Njiba would pair well with the rest of the Chiefs receiving corps, and it would be the second straight year KC selected a wide receiver early in the NFL Draft.  Skyy Moore came along well towards the end of last season, and Smith-Njiba serves as a great compliment.

“The talented receiver posted 95 receptions, 1,606 yards, and nine touchdowns as a true sophomore while sharing the field with Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson. This could be a sneaky good pick and should work well with Patrick Mahomes,” the 33rd team wrote.

If Andy Reid and Veach think the same, it’s tough to argue with either at this juncture. This team knows how to develop wideouts.
