Jonathan David scored a hat-trick for Lille last night against Lyon and there has been a lot of speculation about his future recently.

After a quiet first half at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, David finished off Jonathan Bamba’s cross soon after the break. The Canadian forward then converted two penalties but his side was still held to a 3-3 draw.

David has now scored 53 goals for Lille which has him now ahead of Eden Hazard as the club’s top goalscorer this century. Only Erling Haaland of Manchester City has scored more goals in Europe’s top five leagues this season.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed an exclusive quote from David which says, “The furthest I can see for the moment is the next game and helping Lille get back into top four. Saturday mornings growing up in Canada were about the Premier League and La Liga. PL and La Liga are every kid’s dream”.

Given his form, a summer transfer from Lille could be on the cards. Many clubs across Europe are interested in the forward.

Could Jonathan David join Newcastle?

Transfer expert Ekrem Konur has reported that “Newcastle United are considering checking on the situation of Lille’s 23-year-old Canadian striker Jonathan David.”

Newcastle is currently 6th in the Premier League which is the same position that Lille is in Ligue 1. However, with the backing that Newcastle now have, it would be a step up to move to England.

There is a lot of expectation now on the Magpies with their support of the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. Eddie Howe’s side has already come close to winning a trophy this season but they fell to a defeat to Manchester United in the final of the EFL Cup.

What are Jonathan David’s other options?

David has also been linked with Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea so he will not be short of options when considering a move to the Premier League. His decision may come down to who wins the league, with the Gunners in the pole position for the title.

The striker will be hoping for Champions League football too. United are currently 3rd, with Spurs 4th. Chelsea is seemingly out of the running for this, as they currently lie in 10th place.

Clubs in the Bundesliga including Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig have also been mentioned as possible destinations. However, no teams in La Liga have reportedly shown serious interest. With his form though, you would think that their top sides will be in for him.

The Canadian may not have had the best World Cup, as he failed to score in any of their three matches. His country is co-hosting the 2026 tournament though. The young forward needs to find a club where he can play at the highest level for his development.

David is one of Canada’s great hopes alongside Alphonso Davies of Bayern. If they are to unite in the Bundesliga then that could be great for the chemistry with their national team. Although, a move to the Premier League would also be very tempting.
